New Zealand Loyal – Fisheries Policy

Restoring New Zealand’s Marine Resources and Empowering Our People

New Zealand’s fisheries have been plagued by corruption, mismanagement, and destructive practices. NZ Loyal is committed to restoring our marine resources, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and ensuring that all New Zealanders can enjoy access to these resources without government overreach and regulation.

The Problem

The Quota Management System (QMS), introduced in 1986, has failed to protect our marine resources. Instead, it has led to:

– Large-scale dumping, with an estimated 14 million tonnes of fish discarded between 1950 and 2010

– Overfishing and depletion of fish stocks

– Corruption and mismanagement of fishing quotas

– Unfair restrictions on recreational fishermen

Solutions

1. Ban Bottom Trawling: Within the 12-mile limit, bottom trawling will be prohibited, with no exceptions.

2. Recreational Fishing Priority: Only recreational fishermen, long-lining, and fishing charter businesses will be permitted to fish within the 12-mile limit.

3. Scrap the Quota Management System: The QMS will be abolished, along with the corruption that has plagued it.

4. Commercial Permits: Only those holding commercial permits will be allowed to fish in the marine economic zone, with the practice of leasing permits to third parties abolished.

5. Onshore Processing: Where practical, onshore processing will be mandatory, creating value-added downstream products and boosting our economy.

6. Sustainable Aquaculture: A real and viable solution will be implemented, including aquaculture activities, with input from all stakeholders.

Empowering New Zealanders

NZ Loyal believes that our marine resources belong to all New Zealanders. We will ensure that these resources are managed in a way that benefits our people, our economy, and our environment.

Key Principles

1. Access: All New Zealanders will have fair and reasonable access to our marine resources.

2. Sustainability: Fishing practices will be sustainable, ensuring the long-term health of our fish stocks.

3. Transparency: Decision-making processes will be transparent, with input from all stakeholders.

4. Accountability: Those responsible for managing our marine resources will be held accountable for their actions.

A New Era for New Zealand’s Fisheries

NZ Loyal is committed to restoring our marine resources and promoting a sustainable and equitable fishing industry. We will work with fishermen, conservationists, and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions that benefit all New Zealanders.
